Lecture 2c Flashcards
What are the main functions of the Golgi apparatus?
Modifies ER products, manufactures macromolecules, sorts and packages materials into vesicles.
Describe the structure of the Golgi apparatus.
Composed of flattened membranous sacs called cisternae; has a cis face (receiving) and a trans face (shipping).
What is cisternal maturation?
The process where Golgi cisternae move from the cis to the trans face, carrying specific proteins.
What are lysosomes?
Membranous sacs of hydrolytic enzymes that digest macromolecules and recycle organelles through autophagy.
How do lysosomes participate in phagocytosis?
They fuse with food vacuoles to digest engulfed food particles.
What types of vacuoles are found in plant cells?
Food vacuoles, contractile vacuoles, and central vacuoles.
What is the function of vesicles in the endomembrane system?
Transport materials within the cell during secretion and uptake processes.
What role does the central vacuole play in plant cells?
It stores organic compounds and water.
