Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is an organism
an assembly of molecules functioning as a stable whole that exhibits life
Describe the cell theory
- All organisms are composed of one or more cells
- The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
- Cells arise only from the division of preexisting cells
What did antonie van leeuwenhoek
one of the first people to observe microorganisms through a microscope of his own design
What did Robert hooke do
the first to use a microscope to observe living things; The “cell” was first discovered by him in 1665
Magnification
is the ratio of the object’s image size to its real size
Resolution
is a measure of the clarity of the images; it is the minimum distance that two points in the specimen can be separated and still be seen as two points
What structures do all cells have in common
Plasma membrane, dna, ribosome,cytoplasm
What similarities do cells have
- use energy
-respond to there environment
-Pass on hereditary info
-Most are microscopic
Similarities between eukaryotic and prokaryotes
-Plasma membrane
-Cytoplasm
-Ribosomes
-DNA
How do unicellular organisms carryout activitys
they carry out all activitys nessasary for life
Light microscopes
use light to illuminate specimen
-Reflected light
-Transmitted light
-fluorescence
Electron microscopes
use electrons to illuminate the specimen
-Transmission
-Scanning
