Lecture 28 (Lumbar III) Flashcards
Importance of Low Back Pain A focused review of lumbar anatomy and associated pain generating tissues Discogenic and Facetogenic pain Some common conditions of the lumbar spine Strain / Counterstrain for the lumbar spine and how it correlates with lumbar segmental dysfunction
1
Q
Spondylitis
A
- Inflammatory*** condition of the spine
- Seen in spondyloarthropathies,
2
Q
Spondylosis:
A
- Degenerative*** condition (osteoarthritis) of the spine2
- Common cause of back pain in the elderly
3
Q
Spondylolysis
A
- Pars interarticularis defect (or fracture***), may be congenital, but most commonly a chronic overload injury (repetitive traumatic stress)1
- Seen commonly in athletic teenagers
- Predisposition with steep sacral (Ferguson’s) angle
4
Q
Spondylolisthesis
A
- Classically forward slipping*** of the superior vertebra on the inferior
- In situations of spondylolysis, whether a listhesis develops depends on the ability of the anterior longitudinal ligament and iliolumbar ligaments of the spine to resist any applied forces2
5
Q
Facet tropism
A
- congenital disease
- most common - turning toward or away from pilars
- Articular pillars on one side may be twisted, thus asymmetric
i. e. coronal instead of sagittal - *Key Point: Asymmetric joints may be associated with asymmetric muscle tension and altered spinal motions**
