Lecture 28 (Lumbar III) Flashcards

Importance of Low Back Pain A focused review of lumbar anatomy and associated pain generating tissues Discogenic and Facetogenic pain Some common conditions of the lumbar spine Strain / Counterstrain for the lumbar spine and how it correlates with lumbar segmental dysfunction

Q

Spondylolysis

A
  • Pars interarticularis defect (or fracture***), may be congenital, but most commonly a chronic overload injury (repetitive traumatic stress)1
  • Seen commonly in athletic teenagers
  • Predisposition with steep sacral (Ferguson’s) angle

Q

Spondylolisthesis

A
  • Classically forward slipping*** of the superior vertebra on the inferior
  • In situations of spondylolysis, whether a listhesis develops depends on the ability of the anterior longitudinal ligament and iliolumbar ligaments of the spine to resist any applied forces2

Q

Facet tropism

A
  • congenital disease
  • most common - turning toward or away from pilars
  • Articular pillars on one side may be twisted, thus asymmetric
    i. e. coronal instead of sagittal
  • *Key Point: Asymmetric joints may be associated with asymmetric muscle tension and altered spinal motions**
