Lecture 27 Flashcards
firmicutes: staphylococcosis (aureus)
What is the etiology of staphylococci? (G&C ratio, gram staining, shape, species)
Staph. aureus
low G&C ration
G+ consistent chemistry
grape like clusters
What are the predisposing factors of staph aureus? (3)
opportunist infection
not a primary invader (already on the skin)
infectivity varies from person to person
What is the morbidity of staph aureus?
causes 20% of nosocomial infections
What (6) diseases does staph primarily cause?
toxic shock syndrome staph food poisoning abscesses osteomyelitis bullous impetigo Staph scalded skin syndrome (SSSS)
Describe toxic shock syndrome:
what causes it, where on the body it occurs
caused by staph aureus with the gene toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST1)
growing out on highly absorbent things like tampons and absorbent gauze after nose surgery
associated with the nose and the vagina
What is the treatment for toxic shock syndrome?
treatment is pennicilinanse resistant MSSA (such as oxicilin, cloxicilin, cephalosporin)
food infection
when the microbe is growing on the food and then the food is consumed. Spreads infection to the consumer
food toxicity
when a microbe grows and releases toxins on the food when it dies. The food is consumed and the toxins are what makes the patient sick
Is staph food poisoning food infection or toxicity?
food toxicity
Describe staph food poisoning:
how long it takes to grow out, symptoms, treatment, prevention
takes 3-8 hours to grow out
symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea
no treatment because it is self-limiting infection (goes away without treatment). DON’T give antibiotics (its a toxin not organism making you sick)
prevention is serving food immediately after preparation
Describe staph aureus induced abscesses
carbuncles and furuncles
staph gets into the hair follicles, kills the leukocytes and destroys fibrin
What is osteomyelitis?
caused by staph aureus most of the time
infection of the bones
What is bullous impetigo?
caused by staph
blisters in young children
What is staph scalded skin syndrome (SSSS)?
staph produces an exotoxin which causes skin to look scalded by hot water
How do you diagnose a staph infection?
use the coagulase test (the H2O2 with bubbles if +)
