What is diabetes?
A group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar because of no insulin production or insulin resistance.
When are you diabetic?
1) Fasting plasma glucose > 7.0 mmol/L (126 mg/dL)
2) 11.1 mmol/L after OGTT 75 g glucose (200 mg dL)
3) Random plasma glucose over 11.1 mmol/L (200 mg/dL)
4) HbA1c 6.5 and over.
Name some diseases caused by diabetes:
1) Retinopathy
2) Coronary heart disease
3) Cerebrovascular disease
4) Peripheral vascular disease in lower limbs.
5) Nephropathy
6) diabetic foot
7) neuropathy
Subtypes of diabetes:
1) type 1
2) type 2
3) gestational
4) MODY (maturity onset diabetes of the young) - monogenic
The classic triade of diabetes:
1) polyuria
2) polydipsia
