Lecture 13 Neoplasia metastasis etc Flashcards
What is MMPs?
Matrix metallo proteases - important for metastasis
What is EMT?
Epithelial to mesenchymal transition. Loss of tight junctions, polarity, gets motility and invasiveness.
Intrvasation
Entry into the bloodstream
Dissemination
Spreading
Three ways of dissemination
1) blood
2) lymph
3) interstitial space
Anoikis
Cell death induced by lack of contact
Survival in circulation:
1) embolism
2) resistance to anoikis
3) Tolerating hemodynamic stress - pulling etc
4) escape immune system.
Paraneoplasm =
A phenotype of cancer cells which mediate some sort of hormonal release.
Cachexia =
You loose weight during cancer, muscle mass, fat etc.
Cancer invasion:
1) Detachment and attachment
2) Degredation of the ECM
3) Migration
4) EMT
Name epithelial markers:
1) E-cadherin
2) Beta-Catenin
Name Mesenchymal markers:
1) Fibronectin
2) Vimentin
How does a tumor cell survive in circulation?
1) Embolism
2) Resistancce against Anoikis
3) Tolerating shear force
4) Escaping the immune system
