Lecture 26 Flashcards
Ovid vs. Virgil
-At the end of Ovid’s account it goes into detail of what happens to Aeneas after he kills Turnus
-He becomes a god
-Not as much emphasis on Turnus’ death in Ovid’s account. Glossed over.
-Ovid also glosses over the death of Dido too.
-Juno comes around to liking him in the end
-Get story of Turnus getting help from Greek hero Diomedes which we don’t get in the Aeneid
-Diomedes doesn’t help him
-Ovid’s account has a lot of interjections that have nothing to do with Aeneas (peripheral characters)
-Circe
-Scylla
Ovid looks beyond the major points of the story of Aeneid and focuses on the smaller and more trivial aspects.
Glaucus and Scylla
- Glaucus ate some grass and turned into a water god
- He’s in love with Scylla
- She is not interested in him and runs away
- Circe loves Glaucus but he’s not interested in her
- So Circe poisons the pond where Scylla goes swimming so she turns into a monster
- In this depiction of Circe she is much more negative than compared to the Odyssey
Achaemenides and Macareus
- Achaemenides got stuck behind with the Cyclops in the Odyssey
- Macareus got scared when Odysseus and his men were leaving so he stayed behind
- Ovid is telling the story through the eyes of two guys who either don’t like Odysseus or thought the heroic journey weren’t worth it. These are moments when Odysseus’ men aren’t at their best.
Apotheosis of Aeneas
- becomes linked to ancient god Indiges
- Ascanius/Illus: Aeneas’ son forming his city Alba Longa
- Kings of Alba Longa (city of Iulus/Ascanius in Latium)
Apotheosis
-to become a god
Deification
-to become a god
Pomona and Vertumnus
- Pomona is a nymph that has a garden and doesn’t let men into her garden
- Vertumnus loves her and she’s not interested
- Vertumnus disguises himself as an old woman to be let into the garden
- kisses her and talks himself up
- he later reveals himself and she falls for him
Apotheosis of Romulus
- founder of Rome
- becomes (linked) to Roman god Quirinus
Romulus
- son of Mars
- evil great uncle throws Romulus’ grandfather out of power
- takes Romulus’ mother and makes her a Vestal Virgin because he doesn’t want her to produce a successor
- Mars impregnates her with twins
- evil uncle pays someone to kill them who instead abandons them in a river and they wash up and a wolf nurses them.
- Sheppard finds them and raises them
- they grow up and find out who they are and found Rome then Romulus kills Remus
Subversion
-to flip something over. Something unexpected often with an element of going against the norms of society
