What is pain?
Unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential damage
What are medically unexplained symptoms?
Presence of physical symptoms despite no pathophysiological basis found for them
What are the 3 classifications of pain?
Nociceptive, Neuropathic, Nociplastic
What is nociceptive pain?
Pain associated with damage of peripheral structures
What is neuropathic pain?
Pain arising from disease/injury to nerves
What is nociplastic pain?
Pain arising from altered function of central or peripheral nerve pathways
How does nociplastic pain typically present?
More widespread/intense pain than expected, associated CNS symptoms (fatigue, poor sleep, memory loss, low mood, etc.)
What is neuroplasticity?
Ability for neural pathways to expand or contract according to usage
What are the risk factors for relapse of medically unexplained pain?
multiple physical symptoms, personality disorder, fixed beliefs
