Q

Batesian mimicry:

A
  • Species A (the mimic) is palatable and unprotected (so is eliminated quickly by predators)
  • Species B (the model) is unpalatable
  • Species A will try to evolve to resemble a well-protected model in the same region.
  • Predators avoiding B will also avoid A
  • Species B will evolve away, and species A will continue evolving to catch up

Q

Mimicry in Heliconius butterflies:

A
  • There is a range of phenotypes in each species

- This is due to variation in the P locus of a gene. This gene is LG15

Q

How was this studied?

A
  • The phenotypes were defined
  • Crosses/broods/pedigrees were set up
  • Molecular markers were developed
  • Developed gene markers (anchor loci)
  • Physical and comparative mapping followed
