Lactogenesis Stage I?
mid gestation -> day 2 postpartum, capable of lactation but doesn’t, end triggered by oes. and prog. from placenta withdrawal
Lactogensis Stage II?
post-partum days 3-8, start of large scale milk production, increased alpha-lactalbumin
Glactopoesis?
maintenance of established milk secreion
involution?
around 40 days after last field, occurs due to build up of inhibiting substances
Colostrum?
milk of first few days, lower sugar and fat, higher protein and IgA
Major components of milk?
phagocytes (immunity), enzymes, lactose (breaks into galactose, important for myelin formation), water (88% volume)
Difference between human and bovine milk?
Lineolic acid, essential fatty acid
Mother benefits?
offspring spacing, offspring bonding, weight loss, uterus involution, type II diabetes, post-partum depression, breast and ovarian cancer
Baby benefits?
lowers risk of obesity due to self-portioning, reduces infection mortality, prevention of: otitis media, atophy, asthman, daibetes, later-life obesity
Breastfeeding and cognition substance?
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)
Mastitis?
infection of lactiferous lobe, red triangle, no containdication to breastfeeding
Alcohol?
changes milk, decreases suckling
Caffeine?
is passed on, not as well metabolised, normal levels okay, excess leads to restlessness and irritability
