Lecture 2 (meninges and blood) Flashcards
layers of membrane
1.) dura matter “tough mother”
2.) Arachnoid later “spidery filaments” full of fluid
3.) Pia matter “soft mother” delicate membrane
when the menges becomes squeezed
meningitis
or mengioma (tumors forum in meninges)
membrane that produces cerebrospinal fluid
choroid plexus
choroid plexus
produces CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) through filtering blood
the ventricles of the brain:
1.) Lateral ventricles on the right and left
2.) flows to a third ventricle in the diencephalon
3.) continues through cerebral aqueduct
4.) flows to court ventricle near the cerebellum and pons
5.) three openings where CFS circulates through spinal cord and outer surface of the brain
hydrocephalus
CFS circulation is blocked causing ballooning of ventricles (they accumulate fluid)
Blood supply route:
1.) carotid artery = splits into the anterior cerebral artery and the middle cerebral artery
2.) vertebral artery = they come in through the former magnum and fuse into a single artery (basilar artery)
3.) Basilar artery splits into two posterior cerebral arteries
**anterior, middle, and two posterior arteries
anterior artery
splits form the carotid artery
middle artery
splits from the carotid artery
basilar artery
fuses from the vertebral arteries (splits into two posterior arteries)
posterior arteries
basliar artery splits into two posterior arteries
blood from one artery is blocked, but blood can still circulate
Circle of willis
when will the circle of willis not work?
is the blockage is high up (only works if the blockage is near the brainstem)
role of meninges
to asbord shock (keep brain safe)
