Lecture 19 Flashcards
list the agents which inhibit protein synthesis
aminoglycosides tetracyclines nitrobenzene derivatives macrolide synercid linezoid
are agents which inhibit protein synthesis specific in their targets?
no, they are toxic to us as well as their intended target
List the aminoglycosides
streptomycin
neomycin
spentinomycin
caprenycin
What are aminoglycosides used for?
inhibiting protein synthesis in G- bacteria
although it can be used broad spectrum
What are aminoglycosides toxic to?
ears (oto-toxin) and kidneys (nephron-toxin)
What is streptomycin used for?
black plague (caused by yersinia pestis) Used to treat MDR and XDR TB
How is streptomycin given?
given by injection to ensure that patient takes full dose (since it is MDR or XDR)
What is neomycin used in?
triple antibiotic creams because it is broad spectrum
What is the mode of action of streptomycin?
inhibition of protein synthesis
What is the mode of action of neomycin?
inhibition of protein synthesis
What is spentinomycin used for?
used to treat gonorrhea that has penicillinase resistance (especially in pregnant women with beta lactam antibiotic allergies)
BUT it isn’t made in the USA anymore so use alternatives
Name the alternatives for spentinomycin
gentamycin and azithromycin
What is gentamycin?
alternative for spentinomycin
used for G- infections especially if they’re hospital aquired
is the DOC for pseumonias aeruginosa other infections
What is Azithromycin?
aka zithromax
alternative for spentinomycin
best choice for pregnant women with gonorrhea
What is the mode of action of spentinomycin?
inhibition of protein synthesis
