Which urinary tract abnormalities can predispose UTIs?
Pregnancy, transplant kidney, stones, obstruction, indwelling catheter
How does TB of the urinary tract spread?
Haematogenous spread
What is the affect of TB in the urinary tract?
- calcification of kidneys
- can spread to ureters and bladder
- urethral strictures, abscess, caseous mass
What causes schistosomiasis?
Blood fluke: schistosoma haematobium associated with lower UTI
What can schistosomiasis cause?
Chronic cystitis, bladder calcification, fibrosis, stenosis, bladder cancer
Which systemic infections can cause glomerulonephritis?
Endocarditis, Hep B and C, HIV, TB, syphilis, malaria
What causes post-infectious glomerulonephritis?
Group A strep, 1-4 weeks after a throat infection
What causes endocarditis associated glomerulonephritis?
- Strep viridans or staph aureus
- gentamicin can cause AKI
Which factors increase the risk of infection in CKD?
- reduced immune response
- immunosuppression
- malnutrition
- nephrotic syndrome
- increased age
Which infections are common in peritoneal dialysis patients?
Peritonitis, cellulitis, chest and GI infections, UTI
Which infections are common in transplant patients?
Hep B and C, TB, varicella zoster virus, UTI

Influenza virus
