Lecture 17 - Cancer Flashcards
What does benign mean?
Tumor is not capable of indefinite growth.
What does malignant mean?
Invasive tumor that can grow indefinitely.
Define metastasis.
Cancerous cells dislodge from tumor which are carried to other tissues where they proceed to proliferate.
Define carcinoma.
Tumor from endodermal or ectodermal tissue.
Define leukemia/lymphoma.
Malignant tumors of the hematopoietic cells of the bone marrow.
Define sarcoma.
A tumor of the mesodermal connective.
Can proto-oncogenes become oncogenes? How?
Yes; By undergoing mutation
What do proto-oncogenes do?
Code for proteins which control growth of different things, including cells.
What are oncogenes?
The viral counterparts of cellular proto-oncogenes.
Cyclins and CDKS which are proto-oncogenes drives/promote what?
Drive/promote cell division under unfavorable conditions and become oncogenes.
When an abnormal cell escape, what does this mean?
The checks (G1 checks, synthesis, M stage) have failed. And we will have cancer thanks to the oncogenes.
List the 3 major mechanisms of the conversion of proto-oncogenes to oncogenes.
Carcinogens, viruses, and radiation
What causes malignant transformation?
The translocation of a proto-oncogene from one chromosomal site to another, or a separate chromosome.
List 2 diseases that is the result of malignant transformation.
Chronic myelogenous leukemia, and Burkitt’s lymphoma.
What happens if p53 is mutated in metastatic colon cancer?
It cannot stop the process of the tumor forming in the carcinoma.
