Lecture 17 Flashcards
How does the cancer blood test work?
It scans for fragments released by the tumors
What does more DNA than the average customer mean?
It meant to make dna kits more relatable. It was also meant to teach people about science
How was 23 and me marketable? How were people convinced?
It did not use marketable tactics and not many people were convinced. What helped was getting coverage from publishers.
What are measures of inheritance?
Both observed and inferred factors
What are observed factors?
DNA sequence variation
What are inferred factors?
similarity to relatives
How is study of measures measured or done?
It is done by using large healthcare and -omics
What is true about evolution?
It needs variation
What are ways in which genomes are varied?
New mutation, standing variation, and intogression
What is a new mutation?
Mutation that enterns genome and is beneficial
What is standing variation?
Variation already existing but changes due to environment
What is intogression?
When genomes made it with other cousin genome
Was neanderthal genome helpful?
Not really
What did neanderthal genome help in?
It helped in the immune system and the variability in our hair and skin. Also, neurological and psychiatric
Is archaic integression unique to humans?
No, it has been found in binobos and eastern gorillas. However, this has been seen in small samples
What has introgression helped in?
It helped with adaptations to local challenges like climate and pathogens
What do neanderthal DNA expose people to?
Influence risk for actinic keratosis that may have been helpful at some point but not anymore
What does neanderthal DNA do to blood?
Causes for blood to clot(hypercoagulation)
What does neanderthal DNA do to depression?
It increases the risk for depression
