Lecture 16 3/20/14 Flashcards
The Respiratory System
Function of the Respiratory System: Organs involved in the function of exchanging gases between the atmosphere and blood.
Components of the Respiratory System
(1) nose
(2) pharynx
(3) larynx
(4) trachea
(5) bronchi
(6) lungs.
Nose
a supportive framework of bone and cartilage covered with skin externally and it is covered with mucus membranes internally.
Breathing In Airway Process
Start out at the External Nares and we go into the Nasal Cavity, from there we go into the Pharynx and there are 3 parts. Then to Larynx, then down into the Trachea, then branch into the left and right bronchi. Then secondary bronchi and then tertiary bronchi and down further.
Nostrils
Called the External Nares. They are the two openings on the nose.
Cranial Sinuses
Generally adjacent to the walls of the nasal cavity.
Frontal Sinuses
Set above the orbits and frontal bone
Sphenoid Sinuses
Sets below the Sella Turcica in the Midline
Ethmoid Sinuses
Anterior and Laterally to the Sphenoid Sinus. Set in the Ethmoid bone.
Maxillary Sinuses
Are the largest of all sinuses. Set in the maxillary bone. Located below the orbits. More commonly affected in sinus infections.
Function of the Maxillary Sinuses
Decrease weight of the skull
Vocal Resonance
Nasal Cavity
Floor is formed by the Hard Palate and Soft Palate
Maxillary Bone
Anterior 2/3 Hard Palate and Posterior 1/3 Soft Palate
Palate
Separates the nasal cavity from the oral cavity. And then in the center in the back of the soft palate.
Uvula
A pendulous fleshy structure.
Concha
Scroll like bony structures of the ethmoid bone.
Inferior Nasal Concha Bone
Made up of the lowest Nasal Concha. When they are covered with Mucous Membranes, they are called Terbinates.
When Nasal Concha is covered with Mucous Membranes they are called what?
Terbinates
Terbinates
Create turbulence as the air passes by on its way into the lungs
Functions of Terbinates
Warming up the air, catching the heavier particles by filtering the air before it enters the lungs, it serves to humidify the air.
Meatuses
Spaces in between or grooves or deep depressions in between the concha or terbinates
Superior, Middle, and Inferior Functions as what?
Serving the same general purpose as the concha to warm the air, filter, and humidify the air.
Nasal Septum
Divides the left and right half of the nasal cavity.
Splits the nasal cavity in half. The Nasal Septum consists of the: Perpendicular Plate of the Ethmoid Bone, the Vomer, and cartilage that is anterior.
Internal Nares
Opening at the back of the nasal cavity and leave the nasal cavity.
