A

informing the research participants of the nature of the study and obtaining explicit agreement of participation

ensures their privacy is not violated and also ensures they know enough information to make a rational decision of whether or not they want to participate (risks are addressed)

*researchers are allowed to withhold certain information if revealing it will ruin the study
