Lecture 13: Controlling for Confounding and Extraneous Variables Flashcards
Partial correlations are run when?
you have two continuous variables involved and you want to control for a variable
Ancovas are run when?
you have a categorical IV and continuous DV
and are controlling for continuous covariates
mancovas are run when?
you have categorical IV continuous DV MULTIPLE OF THESE
and continuous covariates
case study
detailed study of a single individual group or event
systematic study of a person group or event
to construct a case study researchers often…
interview the participant over several occasions in addition to gethering other data including survery observations and records = narrative description
analysis of data from case studies is
qualitative
case studies are used for
describing rare phenomena
exploratory research especially in the beginning stages to see if a full experiment is worth time money effort
to supplement empirical data with descriptive anecdotes
three limitations to case studies include
lack of generalizability
lack of control over extraneous variables
observer bias –> rely on the observations by a single researcher thus there is often no way of determining the reliability of validity of the researchers observations or interpretations
