Lecture 13 Flashcards
What is the vasa vasorum ?
A network of blood vessels that supply big blood vessels, since they’re so big.
What is the clinical horizon?
The point up until which you show no symptoms of atherosclerosis.
What can occur in the clinical phase of atherosclerosis ?
- Thrombus and occlusion.
- Aneurysm and rupture.
- Stenosis.
What is the fatty streak ?
The accumulation of a small layer of fat in the vessels. It is normal and everybody has it.
What is atherosclerosis ?
The accumulation of a layer of fat in the vessels with fibrous tissue accumulation. It is abnormal and represents a pathological change in the vessel.
What are the two key components of atherosclerosis risk factors ?
- endothelial dysfunction.
2. chronic inflammation
What is the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis ?
Hemodynamic stress ->Cell Mediators/Cytokines released -> Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation -> Lipoprotein entry and accumulation -> Fibrosis of Smooth Muscle Cells
