Lecture 12 - Reproductive System Flashcards
def: largely comprised of seminiferous tubules and ducts conveying sperm and secretions to the vas deferens
testicles
what do the seminiferous tubules empty into?
tubuli recti and rete testis
what is the seminiferous epithelium?
- complex stratified epithelium
- 2 cell populations: spermatogenic and non-proliferating Sertoli cells
what lines the ducts of the epididymis?
pseudo stratified columnar epithelium with apical cilia
def: common complication of sexually transmitted infections and of bladder infection
epididymitis
what lines the vas deferens?
- pseudostratified columnar epithelium
- similar to epididymis, however the luminal surface is folded
def: lies behind the posterior wall of the urinary bladder, their ducts fuse with the distal end of the paired vas deferens to form ejaculatory ducts, which enter the prostate and end in the prostatic urethra
seminal vesicles
def: flattened support cells that surround primary oocyte to form primordial follicle
follicular cells
what governs folliculation?
LH/FSH
what causes primordial follicles to grow?
follicle stimulating hormon (FSH)
def: slightly larger follicle, with a single layer of cuboidal follicular cells
unilaminar primary follicle
def: much larger, with multiple layers of cuboidal follicular cells
multi laminar primary follicle
def: contains fluid filled space in which enlarges as follicle matures
secondary follicle
def: contains oocyte that has reached a maximum size of about 150 µm, final stage of development
Graafian (tertiary) follicle
what stimulates meiotic division to resume again and form a secondary oocyte?
increasing LH on day 14 of the menstrual cycle, may cause a follicle to rupture
