Lecture 11: Oxidative Phosphorylation Flashcards
Where does oxidative phosphorylation take place?
inner membrane
What is the main job of the ETC?
cashing in energy stored in previous NADH and FADH2
How many membrane bound protein complexes are there?
4( I-IV)
What are the names of the 2 mobile carriers?
CoQ and cytochrome C
Why is oxidative phosphorylation aerobic?
oxygen is required as final e- acceptor
Which complexes do H+ go through?
I, III, IV
What is the structure of ATP synthase like?
motor compose of 2 subunits
What is ATP synthase propelled by?
movement of H+ ions through the synthase
How is cyanide harmful?
It binds to complex IV and blocks electron flow
What is the symptom of cyanide poisoning and why does that happen?
fever because body is stuck in glycolysis which releases a lot of heat and is not very efficient.
What is the 1. way if there is not enough O2?
use a new electron acceptor
ex. sulfur bacteria use nitrate
What does fermentation do?
Keeps glycolysis running in lack of oxygen
What is lactic acid?
pyruvate-> lactic acid in muscles
What is ethanol fermentation?
pyruvate-> ethanol like in alcohol
Main purpose of fermentation
recycle NAD+
