Lecture 11: Endocrine Disruptors Flashcards
Name the 5 non classical endocrine glands
1) Brain
2) Kidney
3) Heart
4) Liver
5) GI
What hormones does the kidney produce?
renin (in the JGA)
erythropoietin
What does renin do?
reads blood volume to control arteriolar diameter (cleaves angiotensinogen to ATI – precursor to ATII)
What does erythropoietin do?
stimulates proerythroblasts and differentiation of RBCs
What is doping and why is it bad?
take recombinant EPO to increase hematocrit - can lead to hypertension and encephalopathy
What hormones are produced by the heart?
ANP and BNP
What do ANP and BNP do?
1) decrease vascular smooth muscle tone
2) decrease peripheral vascular resistance
3) increase capillary permeability
GENERATES INCREASE IN HEMATOCRIT
ANP responds to ______________ while BNP responds to ________
blood volume; stretch
How do ANP and BNP increase filtration rate/decrease blood volume?
decrease afferent arterial tone and increase efferent tone
Between ANP and BNP, which is the better diagnostic tool and why?
BNP (longer half life)
diagnostic for congestive heart failure
What are some environmental endocrine disruptors?
1) PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)
2) DES (diethystilbestrol)
What do PCBs do?
compete with thyroid hormone binding to its transporter in the blood (TTR, TBG)
increases breakdown of thyroid hormone, body thinks it is hypothyroid so it makes more and develops a goiter
What is DES?
synthetic estrogen
