Q

(lecture):

Describe family influences of EDs.

A

(lecture):

Family characteristics of AN patients:

  • Limited tolerance of disharmonious affect or psychological tension; poor skills in conflict resolution;
  • Emphasis on propriety and rule-mindedness;
  • Parental over-direction of the child or subtle discouragement of autonomous strivings;
  • Preoccupations regarding the desirability of thinness, dieting, and good physical appearance.

One study found that eating and weight problems were predicted by low paternal affection, communication and time spent with child (Johnson, et al. [2002]. Am. J. Psychiatry).
