Lecture 1 second half Flashcards
Why are some pathogens opportunistic/accidental?
Some pathogens can acquire virulence factors under certain conditions
What are the 5 requirements for infection?
Entry
Establishment
Defeat host defences
Damage host
Be transmissible
What is virulence?
How harmful a pathogen is to host
What is quorum sensing?
Organisms sense environment using special proteins
What is quorum sensing based on?
Population densities
What does quorum sensing allow pathogens to do?
Allows them to activate genes when enough cells are present
What do biofilms do?
Allows evasion of antibiotics and disinfectants
Inhibit phagocytosis
Capture and retain nutrients
What are the main 3 cytoskeletal components?
Microfilaments
Intermediate filaments
Microtubules
What is the difference between pinocytosis and phagocytosis?
Phagocytosis “reaches out” to engulf the target pincytosis merely pinches out
