LECTURE 1 Flashcards
INTROSPECTION
Process of thinking about our thoughts.
Pros: Awareness of our thoughts makes this an option
Cons: Not al cognitive processes are conscious, diff people use different words to describe the same internal process, it’s not scientific.
Conclusion: Good tool, but we need empirical observations to test theories
BEHAVORISM
Study behavior scientifically. Must be empirical (systematically measured; directly observed)
Stimulus (input) -> MENTAL PROCESS aka BLACK BOX (cannot be empirically measured) -> Output (response)
BLACK BOX
Contains beliefs, knowledge, understandings, interpretations. Since human cognition uses all of this it can’t be written off as just a stimulus -> response.
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
Infers mental processes from empirical observations. Cognitive processes are active, process info. Need some effort on the organisms part to be used.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE AKA SCHEMAS
COGNITION UTILIZES PRIOR KNOWLEDGE TO PROCESS INCOMING INFORMATION
