Lec 9/8-10 Ecology2 Flashcards
Population ecology
group of individuals
community ecology
all organism in a particular area
ecosystem ecology
all organisms and abiotic factors
what is the difference between a population and a community?
populations is a certain specie but community is diff species that live within a specific region under similar environmental conditions.
what are the 3 factors for a fire?
season, vegetation and climate
what happens after a fire?
vegetation is burned; dead inorganic molecules in in the soil (ashes, nutrients)
fact
a disturbance event can start an ecological succession
fact
soil with ashes is more fertile
fact
wild flowers remain doormat and only germinate after a fire; nutrients+sunlight. activate by ashes
ecological succession
sequential replacement of species by immigration of new species and local extinction of older ones.
fact
every species has a set of environmental conditions for ideal growth
what are the two types of ecological successions
primary succession and secondary succession
primary succession
Rocks, lichens, no soil ex earthquake, volcano, glaciers exposing rocks
secondary succession
has soil, their is already plants ex fires, deforestation.
lichens
2 organism algae&fungi, mutual relationship
fact
rainforest do not have ecological successions
why do we have fires?
right ingredients, ecosystem depends on fires, and community is adapted and depends on fire
right ingredients
climate, amount of fuel (dry vegetation), source of ignition (lighting)
ecosystems depend on fires
not enough moisture for bacteria&fungi to recycle nutrients, fire (catalyst, decomposer)
community is adapted and depends on fire
need fire to stimulate germination
grasses and some shrubs
seeds are in the soil and need fire to stimulate germination
shrubs and some trees
resprout from underground storage organs
conifer trees
store their seeds in their cones, seeds are released after the fire opens them
fact
beetles can detect fire, heat senors and will go to the soil for nutrients for their larva
human impact on this ecological succession
fire suppression and climate change
fact
wildfires are increasing and wildfires season is getting longer in the western U.S
fact
2000-2012: 250 avg # of large wildfires per year
fact
7 months avg length of wildfire season
fact
avg annual temps in the W U.S have increased 1.9 F since 1970
fact
forests are drier and longer, primed for wildfires to ignite and spread
fact
snow melts sooner, up to 4wks earlier than previous decades
fact
each species has a niche in the community
