Lec 8 Internal Organization of the cerebrum Flashcards
What are the 4 major C shaped structures of the cerebrum?
- lateral ventricle
- caudate nucleus
- fornix
- stria terminalis
Where is the head of the caudate nucleus located?
- lateral to the anterior [frontal] horn of lateral ventricle
- superior to the temporal horn of lateral ventricle
What is the caudate nucleus?
- C shaped structure of cells
- one of 3 structures that make up that basal ganglia
- part of system responsible for voluntary movement
What is the fornix?
- C-shaped fiber bundle
- carries fibers from hippocampus to mammillary bodies + hypothalamus
What two structures make up the striatum?
- caudate nucleus
- putamen
What two structures make up the lenticular nucleus?
- globus pallidus
- putamen
What is the cingulate gyrus?
part of the limbic system
What is the septum pellucidum?
separates lateral ventricles
What is the septal nucleus function?
reward
What is the amygdala
- most anterior structure of temporal lobe
- part of limbic system
What is important about the uncus?
common focus of seizure activity
What is function of hippocampus?
- learning and memory
What forms the fimbrae of the hippocampus?
fornix fibers
Where is the stria terminalis located?
found between caudate nucleus and thalamus
What is function of stria terminalis?
- C shaped
- output of amygdala to hypothalamus
What is the relationship putamen and globus pallidus to location of internal capsule?
putamen and globus pallidus are lateral to internal capsule
What is the relationship caudate nucleus and thalamus to location of internal capsule?
caudate nucleus and thalamus are medial to internal capsule
