define morality
the rules that people use to balance the conflicting interests of themselves and others
morality is examined in relation to=
the role played by
1= cognition = judgement and decision making
2= emotion = guilt and empathy as motivators
cogntive-developmental theories = piaget
piaget suggested 2 stages
1= morality of constraint
( children before 9-10 yrs conform to societal rules that are viewed as unchanging and unchangeable)
2= morality of cooperation
( older children and adults view rules as strategies for keeping social interactions safe, fair and comfortable. rules can be changed with mutual consent)
cogntive-developmental theories = Kohlberg
Kohlberg had 3 views on moral reasoning
1= changes in moral reasoning reflect changes in cognitive structures ( ways of thinking)
2= children actively construct their moral reality
3= moral development occurs at 3 levels, each with 2 stages
3 levels
1= preconvential 2= conventional 3= postconventional
