Describe the SMS component of Safety policy?
Establishes senior management’s commitment to continually improves safety, defines the methods, processes and organizational structure needed to meet safety goals.
Describe the SMS component of Safety assurance?
It evaluates the continued effectiveness of implanted risk control strategies, supports the identification of new hazards.
Describe the SMS component of Safety risk management?
Determines the need for, and adequacy of, new or revised risk controls based on the assessment of acceptable risk

is a very clear message from top management that safety is their primary goal and that they have both a personal and material investment in maintaining safety and It is from the safety policy and objectives component.

- Regular management review of the SMS
- Executive management involvement
Describe the element Roles, Responsibilities & Relationships and which component does it come from?
this element is about the SMS requiring a shared responsibility for safety, not just with CEO’s but across entire organisations.
An SMS will have a clearly defined breakdown of the roles, responsibilities and relationships between stakeholders across the whole organisation. This element is from the safety policy and objective component.
Describe the element Whole Organisation Commitment and which component does it come from?
While it is one thing for management to ‘say the right things’ about safety, that is totally ineffectual unless safety is an underlying focus across all levels of an organisation.

Describe an operation risk and give an example?
Operations Risks are risks incurred by the organisation’s day to day activities. These risks involve people, systems and processes and are generally mitigated by internal senior and middle management.
Common examples include:
- Hazardous activities affecting safety
- Inadequate financial processes leading to inefficient control - IT back-up systems leading to loss of information
Describe a strategic risks and give an example?
Strategic Risks are risks to do with the company positioning itself within its operating environment. These risks are generally dealt with at board level.
Common examples include:
- Low Cost Competition - Alliance Decisions - Pricing Issue
Describe a compliance risks and give an example?
Compliance Risks are risks incurred by not adhering to external regulations and legislation.
Common examples are heavy penalties, cessation of operations and loss of reputation.
