what is physical activity?
is any body movement produced by skeletal muscles resulting in energy expenditure
what is the definition of health? (who)
“A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”
what are the 6 dimensions of health?
- intellectual health
- social health
- emotional health
- environmental health
- spiritual health
- physical health
what is intellectual health?
is the perception of and motivation for an individuals optimal level of stimulating intellectual activities
(education, education opportunities and what do these bring in terms of job prospects, security and home)
what is social health?
The interaction with and the support of others in the community
what is emotional health?
emotional health is your attitudes and beliefs towards yourself and also life
(ability to deal with stress)
what is environmental health?
The balance between home and work life as well as with nature and community recourses (eg. diseases in community, safe water and food etc)
what is spiritual health?
purpose and meaning in life, the self in relation to others, the community, nature, the universe or some higher power. also to do with the creation of your personal values and beliefs. not just about religion but being in touch with yourself and your values
what is physical health?
relevant in terms of cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, or strength
can you be healthy with out being physically healthy ?
yes it is not all about being physically healthy as there are other aspects to health not just physical appearance
what are the 6 risk factors for lifestyle diseases?
- tobacco smoking
- physical inactivity
- risky alcohol consumption
- poor diet
5 obesity - hypertension
what is hypertension? and what can it lead to?
it is high blood pressure - this is where force of blood on arteriol walls is too high
- this can lead to heart disease or stroke
what can the 6 lifestyle risk factors lead to? (outcomes/diseases)
- (tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, risk alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, hypertension)
hypertension, type II diabetes, stroke, heart disease, depression, arthritis, lung cancer, kidney disease, osteoporosis
what are the 2 health promotion strategies?
Individualistic health promotion (IHP)
Structural collectivist approach (SCHP)
What is the individualistic health promotion approach?
health education focus - knowledge, health risks, persuade/motivate lifestyle change
