What is the difference between sex and gender?
Gender relates to the influences and role of surroundings in establishing identity. Sex refers to identifiable physical factors (Genitalia difference)
Define gender schema.
Gender schema regards the organised networks of knowledge about what it means to be male or female.
What is the difference between impairment and a disability?
Impairment refers to an irregularity in function (Cerebral palsy, deafness, near-sightedness as examples) while a disability is the consequence of an impairment that doesn’t allow an individual to do something specific.
Define handicap with an example.
Handicap is a disadvantage in a particular situation sometimes caused by disabilities. (Blindness being a handicap if you want to drive a car, but not a handicap in learning music etc…)
Define intelligence.
Intelligence is the ability or abilities to use knowledge for solving problems and adapting to the world.
What two forms of intelligence do Cattell and Horn provide as a more specific explanation?
Fluid intelligence and crystallised intelligence.
What is fluid intelligence?
Fluid intelligence is the cognitive efficiency; nonverbal abilities that are grounded in brain development.
What is crystallised intelligence?
Crystallised intelligence is the ability to apply culturally approved problem-solving methods. (How to use Uber, read, troubleshoot technology issues etc…)
How many intelligences does Gardner say exist within his theory?
There are eight different types of intelligences.
What are the eight intelligences within Gardner’s multiple intelligence theory?
Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalist, Bodily-Kinaesthetic, logical-mathematical, linguistic, musical and spatial.
Define interpersonal intelligence
The understanding of others and their own emotions and being able to properly respond to them (Therapist, salesperson etc…)
Define intrapersonal intelligence
The understanding of self.
Define spatial intelligence
The understanding of the visual world around them and being to perform transformations on those initial perceptions (Think artist, sculptor…)
Define musical intelligence
The ability to produce and appreciate rhythm, pitch - musical understanding.
Define linguistic intelligence
The ability to be sensitive to sounds, rhythm and meanings of words (Poet, journalist, author etc…)
