What are the three types of knowledge?
Domain-specific, conditional/self-regulatory and procedural.
What is declarative knowledge?
The knowledge that can be declared through words and symbol systems of all kind.
What is procedural knowledge?
Procedural knowledge is knowing how to do something such as fraction division or making a cake.
What is conditional knowledge?
Conditional knowledge is knowing when and why to apply declarative and procedural knowledge. (When to give up and try another approach, when to skim v read carefully)
What are the three stages of memory?
Sensory register, Short-term memory and long term memory
How long can short term memory hold information for?
5-20 seconds.
How long can sensory memory hold information for?
It can only be held for fractions of a second
What is bottom-up processing?
Perception based on noticing separate defining features and assembling them into a recognisable pattern
What is the difference between maintenance rehearsal and elaborative rehearsal?
Maintenance rehearsal focuses on the repetition of new information whilst elaborative is linking it with something we already know
Define schema.
A basic structure for organising information; a concept.
What is the term used to describe techniques for remembering?
Mnemonics.
