Lean Management Flashcards
What is lean production?
integrated activities aimed at achieving high-volume production with minimal inventories by eliminating waste
What is the value chain in lean management?
A concept that states each step in the supply chain must create value; otherwise, it should be eliminated.
What defined customer value?
something the customer is willing to pay for
What is waste (muda) in lean?
Anything that does not add value from the customer’s perspective.
What are the key types of waste in lean systems?
Defects, overproduction, waiting, unused talent, transportation, inventory, motion, excessive processing.
What are common sources of uncertainty in services?
Task time variability, demand uncertainty, and customer involvement in service production
What is lean logic (Just-In-Time)?
A pull system where nothing is produced until needed, and demand pulls production upstream.
What is the Toyota Production System focused on?
Elimination of waste and respect for people.
What is the goal of value stream mapping?
To visualize product and information flows, and identify value-adding and non-value-adding processes.
What are lean suppliers?
Suppliers capable of quick response, offering lower prices and higher quality.
What is lean procurement?
The use of automation (e-procurement) and transparency between suppliers and customers
What is lean warehousing?
Removing non-value-adding steps and waste from storage processes
What is lean logistics?
efficient transportation strategies including routing optimization and cross-docking
What defines lean customers?
customers who understand their needs, value speed and flexibility, and collaborate effectively with suppliers
What is group technology in lean layouts?
grouping similar parts into families to reduce movement, queue time, inventory, and labor
What is quality at the source?
the principle the work should be done right the first time, and any issue should halt production for correction
What is Just-In-Time (JIT) production?
producing only what is needed, when it is needed, to reduce inventory and expose problems
What is a level schedule?
A production schedule that pulls material at a constant rate to minimize variation.
What is a freeze window?
a period during which the production schedule is fixed and changes are not allowed
What is backflush?
Calculating the parts used to produce a given quantity of finished goods after production.
What is Kanban?
A system using visual signals (cards or containers) to trigger production in a pull-based system.
