What are the 5 Sources/Bases of Power?
I. Legitimate Power
II. Reward Power
III. Coercive Power
IV. Expert Power
V. Referent Power
What is Legitimate Power?
(One’s Formal Position)
All managers have legitimate power because;
- Formal positions in the org.
Whether they are a construction supervisor, ad account supervisor, sales manager, or CEO.
Ex; Can be used positively(Praise) or negatively(Criticism)
What is Referent Power?
(One{Person}’s Personal Attraction)
Seen in influential leaders who can convince others because of their personality, beliefs, or experiences.
This type of power is often found in leaders rather than managers.
What is Coercive Power?
(Threatening & Punishment)
Managers can influence behavior by using their coercive power, which comes from their ability to punish employees.
Ex; Vary from Verbal warnings to Termination.
In certain industries, can use;
- Fines
- Suspensions
Important for managers to use it wisely.
(Overly negative = resentment from employees)
What is Expert Power?
(One’s Expertise )
Comes from having specialized info or expertise.
This expertise can be;
- Simple = Knowing the Schedules and Tasks of your subordinates.
- Complex = Having a Computer/Medical knowledge.
Secretaries may have it because;
- Extensive experience
- Contacts
CEOs may have it because;
- Unique strategic knowledge.
What is Reward Power?
(Promising or Giving Rewards)
All managers have reward power.
Allows them to give their subordinates rewards;
- Praise
- Recognition
- Pay raises
- Promotions.
What is Personalized power?
- Def; Ability to influence other people and events. (Inner Qualities & External Resources)
- Focused on self-improvement.
- May be misunderstood.
What is Socialized power ?
- Def; Leaders who share their power with their followers.
- Aimed at helping others.
- Often used in leadership expressions.
