Q

External threat

A

Cohesiveness in a group can be enhanced by members cooperating against common threats, such as changes in work methods or new managers. Even if the threat is removed, the group’s cohesiveness remains higher. Conflict between groups also increases cohesiveness and makes group boundaries clearer

Q

‘Group behavior and performance can be affected by groupthink’. Do you agree?

Plan;

A

Definition.

This desire to comply has the drawback of frequently preventing the group from hearing important opinions or opposing viewpoints from within and beyond the organisation. It can also hinder/discourage creativity and innovation, leading to a weakening of products or services if perspectives aren’t challenged. Thus, creating a conformist mindset among employees. These can result in poor decision-making or even dangerous outcomes.

Morale and team dynamics also can be harmed by groupthink. A climate of mistrust and disengagement results when people are discouraged from sharing their ideas and worries. This may result in a decline in teamwork, a fall in job satisfaction, and an increase in employee turnover within the company.

Janis’s research into government policy-making groups demonstrates that groupthink, characterized by a decline in cognitive abilities and ethical decision-making as a result of group dynamics, may result in a tendency to go with the flow. This phenomenon can be identified by a delusional sense of invincibility, a refusal to listen to critical feedback, a belief in the moral superiority of one’s group, the classification of opponents, and feeling pressured to support popular opinion while silencing opposing or unconventional viewpoints.

However, groupthink does not always result in negative consequences; in certain situations, it can facilitate efficient decision-making within a group. It can also promote harmony and common ground in disagreement-ridden situations by fostering unity and cooperation within the group by seeking and cultivating common ground. Groupthink can help new companies by emphasizing familiarity and facilitating the coordination of efforts towards a single goal when everyone shares similar perspectives.
