What is leadership?
Influencing others to do what he or she wants them to do
What are the three different ways that leaders come in?
Some are elected
Other leaders emerge by popular chouce
Manager is appointed
What are the five types of leader?
Charismatic - Springs from personality
Traditional - Stems from accepted social order
Situational - right place at the right time
Appointed - Arises from a position/status
Functional - Comes from the individual securing the position by doing what he or she does well
What are the benefits of good leadership?
Reduces employee dissatisfaction
Encourages effective delegation
Creates team spirit
Helps to develop skills and confidence in the group
Helps to enlist support and co-operation from people outside the group or organisation
What skills are required by a leader?
Use power effectively and responsibly
Comprehend that human beings have different motivation forces at different times and situations
Ability to inspire
Act in a manner that will develop a climate conductive to responding to and arousing motivation
What are the 3 main styles of leadership?
Autocratic or authoritarian - do this!
Democratic or participative - lets work together to solve this
Free rein or delegative style - you go and sort out the problem
What are transactional leaders?
See relationship with followers in terms of trade, they give followers the reward they want in exchange for service
What is transformational leaders?
See their role as inspiring others to work at levels beyond mere compliance
What are the skills required by transformational leaders?
Anticipatory
Visioning
Value-congruence
Empowerment
Self-understanding
