What is formal communication?
Planned and intentional and tends to have a professional tone
What is informal communication?
More casual in nature and generally unplanned
What are the four types of noise?
Environmental/physical noise
Physiological noise
Semantic noise
Psychological noise
What is environmental noise?
Physically disrupts communication and prevents the receiver from hearing or seeing the message directly
What is physiological noise?
Refers to actual barriers e.g. hearing loss
What is semantic noise?
Different understanding of words e.g. language
What is psychological noise?
Attitude of sender or receiver e.g. anger or sadness
What are digital tools for communication?
Intranet - private hub that can only be accessed by authorised users
Chat and private messaging
Discussion forums
Tracking and case software
Internet blogs
What steps must we follow to ensure a meeting is effective?
Determine purpose of meeting
Establish who needs to attend
Determine the agenda in advance
Make suitable arrangements for location and time
Facilitate discussion
Manage the plan of action
Summarise
Publish results/minutes
What members must a meeting have?
Chairperson - sets the agenda and ensures meeting acheives its objectives
Secretary - take minutes
Team members - protagonists are positive supporters, antagonists are challenging and disruptive
