- Someone who has influence in helping others to achieve their goals
- They can maintain effort and motivation by inspiring the team or setting targets.

What are the 2 types of leaders?
- Emergent = appointed from within the group
- Prescribed = appointed from outside the group
What is the autocratic leadership style like?
- Leader makes all the decisions.
- They dictate instructions
- Task orientated (set target, achieve quickly), concerned with results
What is the democratic leadership style like?
- Leader listens to the group before makign a decision.
- Person orientated: concerned with inidvidual success/wellbeing. Concerned with interpersonnel relationships
What is the laissez faire style like?
- Leader has little input
- Led by senior players, less motivated players can stop working.
What does the choice of leadership depend on?
- how good the situation is
- Autocratic = the leader is best in a positive (most favourable) or negative (least favourable) situation.
- Democratic = leader is best in a moderately favourable situation

- Leader should use an interactive approach to balance the situation, the leader and the group
- Situation: individual sports need a more democratic, laissez faire style
- A complex task may need a more autocratic style
- Group: lots of numbers may dictate a different style of leadership.
What are the three factors that Chelladurai suggests affects leadership?
- Situation is affected by time available, type of task, danger
