Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Flashcards
1
Q
What are acute injuries and what are the symptoms?
A
- Accute injuries cover fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains)
- They happen suddenly
- Sudden/severe pain
- Swelling
- Non weight bearing
- Restricted movement
- Extreme weakness
- Deformation
2
Q
Types of fractures
A
- transverse
- oblique
- spiral
- comminuted
3
Q
Dislocations
A
- an injury caused when the normal position of a joint is altered
- caused by a fall or blow, sometimes from contact sport
- swollen, v painful, visibly out of place, may not be able to move it
- when properly repositioned, joint will move normally again in a few weeks
- once shoulder/knee has been dislocated, it’s likely to happen again
- wearing protective gear may help prevent dislocations
4
Q
How can you treat disolcations?
A
- manipulation to reposition bones
- medicine
- splint/sling
- rehabilitation
5
Q
Sprains/Strains
A
- sprains: when one of more of the ligaments sre stretched/twisted/torn
- often caused when too much force is applied to a joint
- strains: when muscle fibres stretch/tear
- occur when muscle is stretched beyond limits/forced to contract too quickly
6
Q
How can you treat sprains/strains
A
- RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
7
Q
What are chronic injuries and their symptoms?
A
- includes achillies tendinitis and stress fractures
- occur as a result of playing sports/exercising for a long period of time
- pain when performing
- dulle ache at rest
- swelling
8
Q
What are stress fractures?
A
- overuse injury rather than a mechanical injury
- muscle becomes stressed and transfers it to bones causing a small crack
9
Q
What is achillies tendinitis and it’s symptoms?
A
- caused by overuse of achillies tendon
- common for runners/older athletes
- can cause tendon to rupture
- lots of pain/swelling
- may look abnormal
10
Q
What is tennis elbow?
A
- inflammation of the tendons of the elbow
- caused by overuse of muscles of the forearm
- sometimes caused by playing tennis/golf
