to control and command a business to ensure that everyone is happy, and the business stays in the market
what is the difference between a leader and a manager
a leader sets the strategy and objectives to inspire people, whilst the manager implements the strategy whilst managing risks
what are the 3 traditional manager levels and what are their roles
- senior management - set objectives and strategies
- middle managers - run the business functions and departments
- Junior managers - supervise employees in a specific area

the manager holds the most of the power
advantages of an autocratic business
- efficient communication since it is 1 way
- workers are motivated through rewards and punishments
disadvantages of an autocratic business
- very little delegation (stressful for managers)
- employees may be unmotivated due to their lack of power

the leader still has full control to make decisions, but makes the decisions based on what is best for employees
advantage of a paternalistic business
employees are motivated because their needs are being met

power is split between a group of people who come to a majority vote
advantages of a democratic business
- less stressful because there are shared leadership roles
- employees are more involved which is more motivating
disadvantage of a democratic business
decision making may be ineffective

the leader has little input on decision making, instead, the employees are in control of their own work and decisions
advantages of a laissez-faire business
- employees and junior managers are more motivated due to increased freedom
- effective work can be completed if staff are willing to take on responsibility
