LE 2 CONCEPTS (M8) Flashcards
introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials in the air
Air Pollution
Air pollution that extend from counties to states, nations, and in the broadest sense, the globe
Macro-scale
Air pollution over a few hectares up to the size of a city or county
Meso-scale
Air pollution ranging from those covering less than a centimeter to those the size of a house or slightly larger
Micro-scale
Harmful substance that is emitted directly into the atmosphere
Primary Air Pollutant
Harmful substance formed in the atmosphere when a primary air pollutant reacts with substances normally found in the atmosphere or with other air pollutants.
Secondary Air Pollutant
Thousands of different solid or liquid particles suspended in air
Particulate Matter
Results as an intermediate by-product in the oxidation of methane in the natural anaerobic decomposition of carbonaceous material by soil microorganisms
Carbon monoxide (CO)
a compound of hydrogen and carbon, such as any of those that are the chief components of petroleum and natural gas
Hydrocarbons
volcanic activity and airborne soil
Lead
The dissolution of nitrate in a water droplet allows for the formation of nitric acid, which partly accounts for acid rain found downwind of industrialized areas
Nitrogen Oxides (Nox)
- Man- made pollutant in the lower atmosphere
- Component of photochemical smog
Tropospheric Ozone
- Essential component that screens out UV radiation in the upper atmosphere
- Man- made pollutants (ex: CFCs) can destroy it
Stratospheric Ozone
Brownish-orange haze formed by chemical reactions involving sunlight, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons
Photochemical Smog
RA 8749
Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999
refer to any building or immobile structure, facility or installation which emits or may emit any air pollutant, and may be defined generally as individual points of air emissions
Stationary sources
a source of air emissions that is not confined to a discrete point or points of emissions
Area sources
any vehicles propelled by or through
combustion of carbon-based or other fuel, constructed and operated principally for the conveyance of persons or the transportation of property or goods.
Mobile sources
Sound that is unwanted or disrupts one’s quality of life
Noise
▪ Sound becomes undesirable when it disturbs the normal activities such as working, sleeping, and during conversations.
▪ It is an underrated environmental problem because of the fact that we can’t see, smell, or taste it.
Noise Pollution
main source of noise pollution in urban areas.
Transportation systems
Types of Sound
- Continuous
- Intermittent
- Impact
- Can remove some gases and particulate matter
- Yields dirty and hot fluid that requires proper disposal
Quenching
