The stratum spinosum is characterized by spiny projections from desmosomes and thick bundles of intermediate filaments.

A
One to five layers of dead keratinocytes which form a waterproof barrier.

What is characteristic of stratum lucidum?
A
The thickness and translucence of the skin layer.(i.e. palms and soles)

This outermost layer is made of 20 to 30 dead keratinocyte layers. This protects in high abrasion areas.
