Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
What is the function of the simple squamous epithelium?
- Filtration and diffusion.
- The secretions of lubricating substances.
Where simple squamous epithelium located?
1.Kidney glomeruli
2.Air sacs of lungs
3.Lining of heart
4.Blood vessels
5.Lymphatic vessels
6.Serosae
What is the function of simple cuboidal epithelium?
- Secretion and absorption.
Where is simple cuboidal epithelium located?
- Kidney tubules
2.Secretory portions of glands and ducts
3.Ovary surface.
Describe simple columnar epithelium.
Tall cells with round to oval nuclei these cells may host cilia or microvilli. Contain goblet cells which secrete mucus.
What is the function of simple columnar epithelium?
1.The absorption or secretion of mucus, enzymes, and substances.
Versions of the tissue with cilia propel mucus.
In what organs are non-ciliated simple columnar epithelia located?
The gi tract in its lining and the gallbladder within its excretory ducts.
Where are ciliated simple columnar epithelia located?
The small bronchi and the uterine tubes.
Describe the Pseudostratified columnar epithelia.
A single layer of cells with different heights & nuclei at various levels. These cells can host cilia and contain mucus secreting cells.
Where can ciliated Pseudostratified columnar epithelia found?
The trachea and upper respiratory tract.
Where can non-ciliated Pseudostratified columnar epithelia found?
The ducts of large glands like the sperm carrying ducts.
Describe stratified squamous epithelium.
A thick layering of cells, with squamous surfaces lying at the top and basal cells with are active in mitosis with cuboidal and columnar structure.
What is the function of Stratified squamous epithelium?
It protects the underlying tissues from abresion.
Where is the non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium found?
In the linings of the esophagus , mouth and vagina.
Where is keratinized stratified squamous epithelium found?
On surfaces of the epidermis.
