Burns Flashcards
What are burns? What causes them?
Burns are tissue damage inflicted to the skin by radiation, intense heat, electricity, or chemical exposure. This causes the death of cells within the affected area.
What is the immediate harm caused by burns?
The fluid loss of electrolytes and proteins. This loss of fluids lead to dehydration and this severe imbalance leads to renal failure.
What is the first degree of burn severity?
A first degree burn causes damage to the epidermis which heals in one to two days, it appears as redness and swelling localized to the affected area.
What is the second degree of burn severity?
A second degree burn causes damage to the epidermis and the upper region of the dermis these burns heal in three to four weeks, they appear with redness, swelling, and blisters.
What are first and second degree burns?
First and second degree burns are considered partial thickness burns.
What is rule of nines?
A rule which assigns the body into 11 section with each section equalling 9%. The last 1% of the body is assigned to the genitals.
When are burns considered critical?
Burns are considered critical when they span across the face or respiratory, if over 25% of the body has second degree burns or if over 10% of the body has third degree burns.
What is the reason that these burns are considered critical?
The reason critical burns are considered dangerous is because when this level of surface area is healing from burn damage pathogen can easily contaminate the environments of dead tissues.
What is autograph? Why is it used?
An autograph is a skin graft from a person’s own body from a different region than the one with damage. It is used to avoid the immune system reject the graft at the site of placement.
What is a synthetic skin graft?
Synthetic skin is an artificial skin with a silicone epidermis which is bound to a sponge-like epidermis.
What is a possible secondary which can occur after the body accepts the skin graft?
A secondary skin issue which occur when skin graft is accepted by the body is the limitation of mobility by the formation of scar tissue.
Where does the epidermis develope?
The epidermis develops from the embryonic ectoderm.
What happens has the epidermis develops? How long does it take?
During the development the dermis and the subcutaneous form from the mesoderm it takes about four months.
What also occurs within the four month developement?
1.Strata develops
2.Dermal papillae is apparent.
3.Fingerprints are formed
4.Rudimentary epidermal appendages have downward projections from the basal layer.
