Large animal admin Flashcards
Explain pour on/ spot on products
Simple to apply to animal
Apply accurately with specific instructions of the manufacturer
use application equipment that is compatible with the formulated product and calibrate it regularly to ensure its delivering correct dose.
Rinse after use, clean and dry equipment
Apply along the length of the flattest part of the back, from the withers to the tail head
do not treat is hair is wet or rain anticipated within 2hrs
Avoid damaged skin or areas covered in mud or manure
PPE should be worn
Explain the use of injectables in large animals
Find out how to inject the product It is important injections given correctly as recommended by manufacturers as it may be absorbed differently which could affect the efficacy and tissue residues and risk abscesses in muscle. Things to consider: - correct product -correct species -cprrect equipment - correct restraint methods used - split between injection sites - disposal of needle/syringes
Explain S/C injection in large animals
Loose skin - mainly neck, behind shoulders
grasp a fold of skin and slide needle thorugh the skin parralell to the naimals neck or trunk
Avoids penetration of underlying muscle
Avoids tissue reactions or interfering with tests like TB
Some products administered to the base of the ear - get vet instructions for first time and see manufacturers guidelines
Explain I/M injections in large animals
Neck REstraint must be considered to avoid heat butting or kicking when injection given Draw required medication into syringe Disconnect needle to insert into the animal - hold hub firmly between thumb and middle finger and insert into selected muscle group with a harp slap action Connect syringe to needle Draw back for absence of blood Slowly inject over 10sec period Remove and massage injection site
Explain use of oral drenches in large animals
Know drenching technique to ensure wormer does its job effectively
REstraint of animal - ensure they swallow the whole amount
Guns designed to deliver treatment towards the back of the mouth over the tongue so entire dose swallowed to optimise efficacy.
Slide nozzle of dosing gun in the side of the mouth and over the tongue
Calibrate equipment and check in good working order before and after use
Don’t fill gun too quickly, to avoid bubble and wrong dosing
Explain use of oral boluses in large animals
Given orally using product specific equipment
Follow manufacturers instruction to ensure delivered correctly over the back of the tongue, so they are swallowed
Avoid excessive force as this can damage throat and do not depress plunger until your happy with placement
Keep animal calm and can swallow
Keep head and neck in straight line
Explain use of oral pastes or gels
Graduated syringes
Animals weught debates amount given
Ensure whole dose is swallowed
Under dosing can occur if spit out
