How are tablets given to dogs?

A

Restrain patient as gently as possible
Tablet lubricated with butter or oil
Open mouth by placing one hand over muzzle, while the other hand is used to hold the tablet and also pull down the lower jaw
Place tablet on the base of tongue
Close the mouth and stroke the neck to encourage swallowing

How are S/C injections given?

A

needle and syringe muse be sterile
Patient should be suitably restrained
Raise a fold of skin from suitable area
Swab area with spirit to flatten hair and remove surface dirt
Insert needle under skin and withdraw plunger slightly to check for blood
Inject slowly and gently into patient
Dispose of needle and syringe safely

How are topical drugs given?

A

Skin treatment may be applied in the form of shampoo, ointment and cream
Eye medication can be applied in the the form of drops or ointment
Tilt head back and hold the eye open with the fingers.
Never touch the surface of the eye with the fingers or the nozzle
Ear medication may be applied in the form of drops or ointment
The ear should be free from wax and discharge before application
The patient should be restrained and the pinna held firmly
Introduce the nozzle into the ear canal and apply the contents
gently massage the external ear to ensure maximum coverage
