What is meant by the term phonetics
- the study of how sound is produced by language users
What is meant by the term prosodics
- the study of how speakers create meaning through emphasising aspects of intonation, speed and volume
What is meant by the term IPA [international phonetic alphabet]
- a system showing the different sounds possible
What is meant by the term phonology
- study of the way sounds are produced (refers to the more abstract sound system)
What is a dipthong
- A vowel sound that is the combination of two separate sounds
what is a homophone
-Words that are pronounced the same but mean different things and may be spelled differently
What are articulators
-The vocal organs above the larynx that help to form consonants
What is a heterophone
-The vocal organs above the larynx that help to form consonants
What is a minimal pair
- Two words that differ in only one single sound
What is sound iconicity
- The matching of a sound to an aspect of meaning

- A pattern of repeated consonant sounds for effect
What is meant by term assonance
- A pattern of repeated vowel sounds for effect
What is sibilance
- A pattern of repeated frictive sounds, especially /s/ for effect

- words that have some associated meaning between their sounds and what they represent

- ‘non- words’ that are intended to signify some meaning through their sound
