Brain Regions
Two areas in the LEFT HEMISPHERE responsible for speech production and language comprehension:
BROCA’S AREA: controls speech production
WERNICKE’S AREA: controls language comprehension
Broca’s Aphasia
expressive aphasia, patients can comprehend speech, but have reduced ability to produce spoken language
Wernicke’s Aphasia
receptive aphasia, fluency of speech retained, but comprehension of speech is lost – nonsensical speech
Conduction Aphasia
damaged connective bundle of axons, speech production and comprehension intact, but connection is lost – can’t repeat things already said
