It’s said the language used is deficient. Lower class families communicate in gestures as well as disjointed phrases and single words
How does poor language affect a child’s achievement
Those with poor language skills grow up incapable of abstract thinking and unable to explain and describe.
What is the restricted code
This is the speech code usually used by the working class. It have short vocabulary and is based on simple sentences.
This speech code is context bound. This means that the speaker assumes that the listeners shares the same experiences.
What is the elaborated code
This is usually used by the middle class.
It is based on more grammatically advanced sentences.
This is context free. This means that the speaker and converse regardless of the situation or previous knowledge
How does the elaborated code give the middle class an advantage
The elaborated code is used in textbooks, teachers and exams.
Due to being exposed to the code already, they feel at home at school and are more likely to succeed
How does the elaborated in schools act as a disadvantage for working class children
They lack the code in which schooling takes place which causes them to underachieve.
School also fails to teach the elaborated code properly.
