Landry and Bartling Support for WMM Flashcards
Aim
Investigate if articulatory suppression would affect the recall of a list of letters which were phonologically dissimilar in a series of recalls
Articulatory Suppression
Process of inhibiting memory performance while speaking while being presented with an item to remember
-Task= recite the numbers &2 per second
Participants
34 Undergraduate students
Method
Two Conditions
- Experimental group=participants were asked to recall a list of letter whilst administering the articualtory repression task
- Control Group=Memories letters of the list and no suppression task
Procedure
Independent Sample Design=participants tested individually
- 7 letters with phonological differences
- Viewed a practice list
- Participants asked to review letters for 5 seconds and then 5 seconds after, recall letters chronologically
- Trial=10x
Results
Percentage of accuracy for control group was greater than experimental group
- Mean percentage of control group=76%
- Mean percentage of Experimental group=45%
Conclusions
Support Experimental hypothesis, which challenged the working memory
-Supported the WMM as articulatory suppression is suppressing rehearsal in the PL
Strengths
-No Testing effects. participants did not affect the reliability of data by rehearsing and improving
Limitations
No check on intelligence of participants
-No matched pairs, variability of participants in different groups may have influenced the data
